Part 2: By Land or By Sea
Investigate the three routes by visiting the links below. After reading about each. Pick one. You will choose between the Oregon-California Trail, the Panama Shortcut, or around Cape Horn. Pay close attention to the advantages and disadvantages of each. You really need to consider cost, and the potential risk involved in each.

After reading a brief description of each route, chose one. You will now investigate that route in depth. Remember to take notes as you read! You will need detailed information to complete your journal.

Journal Entry 2: April, 1849
In your second journal entry, complete the following.
Step 1:
List the pros and cons of your chosen journey. You will need to go back and take notes on the route you chose to do this! Take notes in the format below. Then, explain why you feel your route is best for you.
Step 2:
Write a journal entry detailing your voyage west. For this journal, you are just beginning your voyage.

Write an entry as if you are starting your journey. Where are you staring from? What supplies did you bring? How much time do you expect the voyage to take? How do you feel about your method of transportation?
Who will be traveling with you? Did you have to leave any family members or friends behind? What are you planning to do once you get to California? If you strike it rich, what will you spend your money on?
**Be descriptive! These entries should be long and detailed. Have fun with this!
